The honest answer
Every plumber gets asked this question, and every honest plumber will tell you it depends. There is no magic age where a boiler needs replacing, and anyone who tells you otherwise is probably trying to sell you one.
Here is how we think about it.
Age matters, but it is not everything
Modern combi boilers typically last 10 to 15 years. If yours is within that range and has been serviced regularly, a repair is usually the right call. If it is over 15 years old and breaking down frequently, replacement starts to make more financial sense.
The key word is frequently. One breakdown in ten years is not a pattern. Two breakdowns in six months probably is.
The cost calculation
A rough rule: if a single repair costs more than a third of a new boiler, replacement is worth considering. A standard combi boiler replacement in Glasgow typically runs between 2,000 and 3,500 pounds, depending on the model and any pipework changes needed.
A repair might be 150 to 400 pounds. If you are looking at a 700 pound repair on a 12-year-old boiler, that is the point where the numbers start favouring a new unit.
Efficiency gains are real
An old G-rated boiler might run at 60 to 70 percent efficiency. A new A-rated condensing boiler runs at 90 percent or above. On a typical Glasgow gas bill, that efficiency gain can save 200 to 350 pounds per year.
Over ten years, that is 2,000 to 3,500 pounds — roughly the cost of the new boiler. So in many cases, a new boiler pays for itself through lower bills.
Signs your boiler needs replacing
Beyond age and cost, watch for these signals:
Frequent breakdowns: more than twice a year suggests the system is wearing out generally, not just in one component.
Yellow flame: a healthy boiler flame is blue. Yellow or orange can indicate incomplete combustion, which is a safety concern.
Strange noises: banging, whistling, or gurgling that was not there before. Some noise is normal, but new noises usually mean something has changed.
Radiators slow to heat: if your radiators take noticeably longer to warm up than they used to, your boiler may be losing capacity.
Parts becoming unavailable: older boiler models eventually stop being manufactured, and replacement parts become scarce or expensive. This is a strong signal to replace.
What we recommend
We fit Worcester Bosch and Vaillant boilers. Both manufacturers offer solid warranties (up to 10 years on some models) and parts availability is excellent. We have no commercial relationship with either brand beyond being trained installers — we recommend them because they are reliable.
If you are unsure, we are happy to look at your current boiler and give you an honest assessment. We will tell you if a repair makes more sense. There is no pressure to replace — we would rather have a customer who trusts us than one who feels pushed into a sale.
Getting a quote
We offer free quotes for boiler replacements. We will visit, assess your current setup, and give you a written quote with no obligation. The quote includes the boiler, installation, disposal of the old unit, and commissioning. No hidden extras.
